Cookie Monster. What a weird character.
Most known for his large appetite for food, especially chocolate chip cookies, his appearance on the children’s show, “Sesame Street,” taught children valuable lessons, such as counting, adding and subtracting. But the reason I like Cookie Monster so much is that he understood the meaning of true friendship. He knew when it was time to share his last cookie.
Friendship. It’s something we all cannot live without. It’s that mutually beneficial relationship you share with one or more people that enhances your life and makes it more interesting and fun. Friendship is a necessity and whether we want to admit it or not, it makes us feel as warm and fuzzy inside.
One of my favorite quotes completely captures the essence of friendship and goes like this:
Friendship is weird. You pick a human you’ve met and you’re like, ‘yup I like this one,’ and you just do stuff with them.
For me, this is absolutely true. Do you remember your first day of Kindergarten? I know I do. A little boy named Dylan sat right beside me and by the end of the day we were best friends. We shared crayons and coloring books, played together on the jungle gym and even shared our lunches. We had never met each other before that first day, but we didn’t care. We picked each other and we did fun stuff together.
Unfortunately, not all friendships are as easy as the ones you made back in Kindergarten. As you get older, friendships take more time but provide you with more personal rewards. Friends, if you pick the right ones, will celebrate with you during the good times, but will also listen to you and cheer you up during the bad. We trust our friends 100% and lean on them when we need advice or are confused about an important life decision we need to make. We love them like family.
Natalie, one of my oldest and best friends has been there for me since pre-school. Sure we’ve had some hard times, but in the end we realize how much each other’s friendship means to us. She is like a sister to me and I feel comfortable confiding in her, no matter what the situation because I know she will not judge me. She simply listens, asks questions and tells me what I need to hear in order to pick myself up and move on with my day. And I do the same for her.
Friends understand each other. It’s almost like they use telepathy because they always know the right thing to say or do to make us feel better. Without friendship, life would have little or no happiness at all. We would have no one to share our special moments and make memories with and no one to tell our stories and life secrets to. We share every part of our lives with our friends and that’s what makes our lives so special.
So Cookie Monster did in fact have it right.
